Clinical Terminology

IndieBase distributes third-party clinical code sets inside the product so that diagnoses and injuries can be recorded against recognised national and international standards rather than free text. Those code sets are licensed to us, and their licences require us to publish the notices on this page.

SNOMED CT

IndieBase includes SNOMED CT under two agreements, both of which apply: the SNOMED CT Affiliate License Agreement with SNOMED International, covering the International Release, and the SNOMED CT UK National Release Affiliate Licence Agreement with the UK Terminology Centre, covering the UK National Extensions and UK National Derivatives obtained through NHS TRUD.

Both are free of charge for use in the United Kingdom. Clause 8.3.1 is identical in both and requires the following notice, reproduced exactly as the agreements word it. It must not be paraphrased, shortened or modernised.

What is included

IndieBase does not ship the whole of SNOMED CT. It ships one reference set: the NHS emergency care diagnosis reference set, which is the code list the NHS Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS) uses for diagnosis, restricted to the concepts and descriptions that reference set names.

Clause 8.3.2 appears in both agreements and asks for different things, so both rows above are required. The SNOMED International agreement requires the version and date of the International Release; the UK agreement requires the version and date of the UK National Extensions and UK National Derivatives, which is the UK Clinical Edition row. The emergency care diagnosis reference set is a Sub-Set, and therefore a UK National Derivative, so it is the UK agreement that governs it.

The reference set IndieBase derives from that release is a non-Standards-Based Third Party Derivative: it is a plain JSON extract, it mints no SNOMED CT identifiers and it is not published as an RF2 extension. Clause 3.1 requires a Namespace Identifier only for Standards-Based extensions and derivatives, and clause 2.1.5 expressly permits sub-licensing non-Standards-Based derivatives to end users, which is what distributing IndieBase does.

The IndieBase release identifier is the version your device holds. It appears on every patient report form, and every diagnosis recorded in IndieBase stores the release it was chosen from, so a diagnosis remains interpretable against the exact code list that was in use on the day it was recorded.

Where it comes from

SNOMED International owns SNOMED CT. The UK Edition, and the emergency care diagnosis reference set within it, are published by NHS England's UK Terminology Centre and obtained through the NHS TRUD service. SNOMED CT is free of charge to use in the United Kingdom: the SNOMED International agreement charges fees only for activities in Non-Member Territories, and clause 7.1 of the UK agreement states that no licence fees, charges, usage fees or royalties are payable for the UK National Extensions and UK National Derivatives.

Updates

Reference set releases are superseded periodically. When IndieBase publishes a new release, earlier releases are retained so that historical records stay readable against the code list they were written with. The release identifier in the table above changes when a new one is published; this page and the patient report form always state the release the product is currently distributing.

OSIICS

IndieBase includes the Orchard Sports Injury and Illness Classification System (OSIICS), version 15, created by Dr John Orchard. OSIICS is free to use provided it is acknowledged, and IndieBase acknowledges it here and in the product.

The code list IndieBase distributes is taken from the author's published spreadsheet, which is the distribution the author licenses for this use.
